WORKPLACE ERGONOMICS… what is your role in the process?

On my first day in a new job, I walked into the office, allocated to me, with the zeal to get started with familiarizing myself with the environment. As I approached the desk, my heart sunk…anxiety was creeping in as I was trying to figure out how to respond to what I was experiencing. “I can’t sit on that chair. I won’t be able to function properly with all the discomfort to my back, neck etc.…I won’t last!” I told myself.
While battling with how I would communicate my concerns to responsible offices without coming across as an irrational newcomer, an officer from human resources department walked in, warmly welcomed me and asked if all was well. I thanked him and with careful candor, I conveyed my concerns over the chair. It was was not ergonomic… Long story short, I was advised to raise the issue with my supervisor which I did on the same day. A new chair and desk was procured and delivered within a week.
My experience inspired me to take a keen interest in the role of appropriate office furniture as an enabler to performance of actors in an organization.
According to my reading, “ergonomic office furniture is designed to provide optimal comfort and support for individuals working in an office environment. This includes chairs, desks, keyboards, and other accessories that are crafted to promote good posture, reduce strain, and enhance overall well-being while working for extended periods.”
There is an inherent responsibility on actors to understand what an ergonomic environment entails and how it promotes optimal performance. Further, I would recommend that in planning for office furniture, due attention is paid to the specifications in that regard. Knowing what furniture befits your work in the organization is a positive contribution to planning.
