RESPONSE AND ATTITUDE TOWARDS “STAND OUT” COLLEAGUES

There is a lot of discourse about how to be impactful, persuasive and influential in our endeavors. However, this article shifts attention to those that are recipients of the conduct of colleagues that “stand out”.
When we come across people who are confident and effective in what they do, sometimes there can be mix of responses. I have observed in some circles that as actors in a corporate or even in other situations in life, we make assumptions as to the state of mind of our “stand out” colleagues. There is an assumption that they don’t need support to perform, are full of themselves, are dominating and so on.
There are also those that are genuinely inspired, motivated and appreciative of the “stand outers”. They are visibly encouraged and make efforts to commend their high flying colleagues and regard them as a resource for learning among other things.
It is important to recognise that as actors in an organization, we are a team that has a mixed bag of skill, competence and other attributes. The expectation of the organization is that all these factors can be used for efficiency, effectiveness, capacity building, optimal performance and success.
Apprehension is a human emotion and resides in us all. Therefore, even peak performers or “stand outers” may find themselves in that situation and will look to get support to help them overcome it. Therefore, those of us that may be recipients of such impressive input from our colleagues must exercise empathy and communicate assurance, value and encouragement in that regard.
There are some “stand outers” that are actually unaware of the fact that they stand out and would be surprised to hear that there is a view that they are show offs! Others are aware of their admirable qualities and consider their contributions to be of help to the team and would be equally surprised that they are thought of as being too full of themselves.
What kind of recipient are you? Asking yourself this question, in my view, will enable the establishment of our respective attitudes towards progress and serve as a moment of introspection.
Remember, an organization is not just about a single person but the collective efforts of a multi disciplinary team who can leverage and learn from each other.
 Let’s share!
