IN LEADERSHIP OR IN A LEADERSHIP POSITION?

In our many encounters, I am sure we have been confronted with profound learning and growth points when it comes to corporate leadership in our organizations.

As mentors and coaches, we are most elated when we are part of the making of a great leader in our fields. We are filled with a sense of pride, fulfillment and service.

Particularly on leadership, I would like to invite deep consideration to what the product of our hard work and commitment is. Have we contributed to the making of a true leader or simply facilitated a leadership position without the necessary tools and attributes to practice good leadership?

Sometimes people go through the teaching but do not motivate or ignite themselves to ensure that their wiring for leadership is switched on and equal to the demands. These are people who hold a position and are remunerated for it but will most likely crack or perform dismally when it comes to influencing the behavior of the team they are said to lead. More often than not, they fail to drive effective collaboration between the individuals and collective and behave as though they are also looking for a place of refuge for a solution that falls on them to devise.

Leadership is practice, skill, style, commitment and passion, all of which have to be internalized and conditioned as part of our fibre network as persons.

Are we wired for leadership or are we just the decorative piece supporting the aesthetic in the room?
