I have had many experiences with Personal Assistants in the various organizations I have had the privilege to serve. Some have reported to me and some have reported to fellow colleagues.
The role of the Personal Assistant to a fellow actor in the organization is one that entails a good understanding from the individuals whose office they serve and the organization at large.
In my mind, I see the Personal Assistant as one whose job is to make things more efficient for the office they assist. This means that they need to understand the office holder to the extent that their support can be effective. It is equally important for the office holder to take time to make it easier to be understood so that they can be adequately assisted. In my experience, I have found it helpful to explain my professional personality, work style and ethic to the Personal Assistant and also to take time to understand them. Offering support to build capacity, resilience and confidence to manage their portfolio when required is something I have mostly done informally but conscientiously.
As a brand, I have developed a practical course called corporate confidence and etiquette which has a component inspired by some experiences with Personal Assitants ( please visit the LMN Knowledge Center!).
Recognising that each role in the organisation moves the needle closer to the goal, is the reason I see the Personal Assistant as one of the enablers of the greater success of the office they support.
So to the Personal Assistant, I heard your knock and please come into my house of thoughts … you are most welcome !
