BEING CHALLENGED AND RISING TO THE OCCASION IN CORPORATE GOVERNANCE…swallow the bile first and then breath!

Do you appear to be moved or unmoved by being challenged on issues raised by colleagues regarding a view that you may have expressed as you discharge your corporate leadership function?
As human beings we have natural apprehensions towards being challenged and therefore, we are moved in one way or the other by a challenge on our viewpoints!
Over the years, I have come to learn that challenges require resolution so that progress can be made. It is therefore important to take a “healthy” approach towards responding to challenges, especially in corporate governance.
In my humble view, it is important to remember that chances are very high that you will belong to a group where diversity thrives. That on its own, will entail that team members may have different views on an issue.
The diversity that teams bring should be embraced as an opportunity for personal and well as corporate growth.
Challenges should be met and not feared. Swallow whatever may taste as “bile” in the challenge, take a breath and then apply your mind as liberally as possible, refining your thoughts as you go along. Focus on the challenge and the need to resolve it. By being liberal in thought, you have created a space where concession on issues you may have misapprehended and/or expression of your view in a manner that can be better understood, is possible.
As corporate leaders, it is important for us to recognize that it is a privilege to be in a position to influence the behavior of others, and therefore, dedication to improvement to the quality of our leadership is imperative.
I hope this gives a certain perspective to a proposed response to challenges that may present themselves to us and how we can deal with them.
Let’s share!
