CORPORATE HUMOUR: A SOURCE OF BALANCE

I have been inspired to share my thoughts on this topic as I reflect on striking a balance between exuding the levels of seriousness required to discharge corporate functions without coming across negatively to teammates and leaders. I am sure many agree that it is never their intention to unsettle colleagues but that sometimes they find themselves getting feedback to that effect.

Over the years and for various reasons, I have found myself making conscious efforts towards having a sense of “humour” as I live my corporate life.

I think that the first step towards striking a balance is to identify your source of balance which would most prefereably, be something that gives you a sense of comfort.

In my humble view, light moments are natural and comfortable for many, probably because they are part of the basic needs for us as human beings.

I must hasten to point out that my use of the word “humour” is not restricted to jokes. It can be sharing on a hobby or interest in personal investment, for example.

I find that a light moment which is not offensive but relays the message “hey, we are all decently human ” helps.

I think that communication with a sense of “humour”brings an energy to the corporate table that can stimulate and unlock potential that would otherwise be difficult to cultivate in an environment where the norm is generally that you are operating a company which is a juristic person and inacapble of appreciating human feelings. Undervthis rather myopic approach, expressing softer attributes would not resonate with the person of the corporate as it is devoid of feelings.

I would advocate that it would be more advantageous to create a balanced environment for optimal results in our respective areas of operation.

Humour is one source of such balance but I am sure I will learn from colleagues where they go to achieve high performance and delivery in that regard.

In closing I would like to say that perfecting the art of tapping on your source of balance has benefits that go beyond your corporate life. Try it!
