CORPORATE SELF DISCIPLINE PART 9 OF 10 – N FOR “NORMALCY”

In organizations, sometimes there is an unfortunate occurrence of toxicity in the workplace. It is of course, most uncomfortable for the actors that are subjected to the “toxins” that are introduced by other actors (who, sadly, may be deriving pleasure from this state of affairs). The cry from the aggrieved actors would be  for the restoration of normalcy so that they can discharge their given functions on a level playing ground.

Considering the gravity of the impact of a toxic or abnormal environment, normalcy is an integral part of corporate self-discipline. This component of corporate self-discipline would typically be characterized by fairness, equity, ethical conduct, among others, to promote a healthy working environment.

Actors in organizations are encouraged to employ their utmost best endeavours to create a platform of normalcy within their respective areas of control. In the same vein, all actors have the responsibility to look out for themselves and each other for any negative disruptions to the state of normalcy.

What then, would a corporate actor need to focus on in their quest to inculcate normalcy as part of corporate self-discipline? I will answer this question very simply by referring to the golden rule of ethical behavior which is premised on treating others the way you would like to be treated. Carrying this rule as one of the core personal values will direct efforts towards the creation of an environment characterized by normalcy.

As we pursue high performance and excellence as individuals and organizations at large, we must not forget that we are not exempted from being on the end of the stick of toxicity which hinders progress and invokes feelings of sadness, frustration and resentment.

Making a pledge to oneself to intentionally resist any temptation of abuse of position that translates to selfishness and unfairness and living by it is good for the soul and those that surround us.
