DO NOT BE THE ONE TO SELL YOUR PROFESSION SHORT…

A keynote speech I recently heard is my inspiration in this article.

The speech was premised on the speaker sharing some thoughts on some experiences and observations made in the practice of our profession. The speech was punctuated by humerous illustrations that the audience seemed to resonate with.

Upon reflection, I think that the speech was timely and contained a serious message to our profession to uphold our ethics and conduct. The examples that were given pertained to conduct by members of our profession which had the effect of bringing the profession into disrepute.

My take away from the speech was that professionals must not be the ones to sell their profession short in the eyes of right thinking society and other stakeholders. Rather, we should contribute to upholding our respective professions and what they stand for. This way, energy will be directed towards the well being of the profession so that there is progress and continuity.
