A cadre of actors that straddle across professions in the organisation, supervisors have a unique responsibility in operational excellence. Having structures and systems is one thing and ensuring that they actually serve their purpose is another.
Supervisors by definition are those officers that oversee and administer behaviour towards achievement of tasks within their respective realms of authority. A typical example would be administration of discipline where immediate supervisors would initiate disciplinary action against suspected erring officers who report to them or where they recommend promotion of staff under their supervision to higher positions within their ambit of authority.
In organisations actors invariably reports to another right up to the shareholders/ ultimate owners where the structural reporting ends. This is also a mechanism that promotes performance in an organisation premised on the principles of accountability.
Next time you consider your supervisor, bear in mind that their job does not just entail making sure that you behave but also to ensure that the organisation is moving closer to its goal!
To the supervisors in an organisation… welcome to my house of thoughts!
