PAST GLORY…can you leverage on it for the present?

About 30 years ago (don’t start calculating my age!), I won a national essay writing competition and proceeded to be awarded a silver medal at global level…all thanks to the Universal Postal Union.
My secondary school was very proud of me and conferred a related award of their own on me!
Soon thereafter, I was appointed Senior Prefect and Vice House Captain…my little moments of fame!
The assumptions drawn from these experiences is that I was probably a good essay writer, isn’t it?
I continued with that glory and started a script for a fiction book, and I remember one of my classmates was standing by to read each Chapter! Don’t ask me what happened to the script which was at an advanced stage of writing… I think life took over and I found myself at university, eager to pursue law!
Fast forward to the present…I often ask myself if I can use that past glory in my current work/life situation.
I have found that it is important to realize that the past glory is an experience that hopefully adds to shape your foundations to be able to navigate the future. It doesn’t make you the best at what you are doing now…it doesn’t make you an astute leader or other kind of actor.
In an organization, there is hardly any space for prefects, or essayists… the approach is more complex, collaborative, embracing and team oriented. Your past glory may form part of a useful basis in relation to the required character and attributes for achievement of organizational goals.
The lessons I have drawn from here are many…one of which is introspection on vantage and strength based on a past glory. Refine it for relevance before you decide that it is a leverage point.
Let’s share…
Thank you!
