THE NET EFFECT OF CONTRIBUTION TO OUTCOMES

  1. In the road that we use in the journey of our careers we encounter a number of things, some of which are trivial and hard to remember while others add to the definition of our professional characters.

Over the years, my views of what contributions of individuals and groups within organizations should be, has evolved into a single question that I regularly ask myself, which is:

“Do I understand the universe the organization operates so that I can structure my contribution?”

I have come to learn that to be a professional in your own right is but one of the tools that you need to be able to deliver results.

It is important for you to understand the core purpose of your organization and where it desires to see itself in the short, medium to long term future.

Once you answer the above question in the affirmative, it will mark the beginning of a journey to efficiency and effectiveness as you will be clearly focused on doing your part in the attaining of the objectives of the organization.

I have found that it becomes feasible to plan strategically, operationally as the case may be, once you get your bases right.

Role and performance setting become a natural product of your correct positioning with regard to the organization. There is also a good case for compensation and reward based on a structure that is premised on proven principles.

After all is said and done, it is important for one to determine what the net effect of their contribution is, embrace it and utilize the result to continue perfecting the art of getting closer and closer to the goal.

Approaches such as SWOT, PESTEL, 7S, Balanced Score card and so on, all assume that we are or become aware of our universe and know how to behave in it to achieve the prize!

I think that interrogation of self, be it as an individual, group in an organization or as an organization as a whole is healthy and progressive!

I look forward to more defining encounters as I walk the road and hope I can hear of encounters from friends and colleagues.
