I was once in discussion with a colleague and it was in an area which is not really my forte. He said about a dismal picture on the face of it and other things, that whether it was good or bad news was relative. Some of the others that joined the conversation looked at him as though he was wallowing in fantasy.

However, listening to him, I think I got it. He said it’s bad news if we were planning to dispose at that very time but if it was information that was available to us and we had no intentions to dispose, we wouldn’t be losing anything that we hadn’t already lost at that point, only that the information was now in our faces!

The opportunity before us was for the development of a strategy that was focused on improving the bad situation for the future.

Always grateful to see things in different perspectives. I had the best of both worlds!

Depending on which stakeholder is looking at the issue, it would be good or bad news when related to their interest and its scope. That is why it is important to be open minded to all factors as we endeavour to achieve a balance.
