I am excited to write about this subject because I think I have now figured out how to share it!
A colleague of mine, whose generosity with feedback to me in certain areas has been inspiring, has played an unknowing but pivotal role in solving my sharing predicament here..
One of the many things she has said to me is, “ I notice that you and your teammate were sitting with almost the same posture during the meeting!”.
I thought the discussion could end by my simply laughing it off until I heard what else my colleague had to say…
“The way you sit sends a message that you are attentive in the meeting but that you are also processing what is being discussed with a view to contribute to the discussion if necessary. I also see that you are quietly liaising with your teammate and I can actually sense your agreement with her on certain points…then you both seamlessly default into that posture from the beginning!”
I then became aware of my posture and was constantly reminding myself about it during engagements. I realized that there were certain aspects about the posturing that were useful in the discharge of my functions and as usual, I looked for words to help me break it down;
1. We are corporate ACTORS! In my view, this calls upon us to act our roles accordingly. Similarly with entertainment arts, we are required to posture and express ourselves in certain manners to be able to effectively communicate our ideas and contributions
2. When you posture a certain way, your body is EXERCISED and your frame is aligned. This, if done properly is healthy
3. The way you posture also sends a non verbal message to colleagues that you are ENGAGED and ready to participate and apply yourself to the activity at hand
4. Posturing also assists you to be able to SCAN your environment and you are able to sense the mood levels around you. This helps you to assess and be emotionally and ethically intelligent about the way you approach matters during your engagement
5. Your posture can also communicate the fact that you VALUE the essence of time and as such, you will be approached with issues of relevance and by others
6. Posturing also opens the doors to other ATTRIBUTES such as eye contact, facial expressions and so on, which I will discuss in detail in future!
So… sit up with posture and let me know how that works for you!
Let’s share!
