A discussion I had with a young lady inspired me to write this piece.
With a somewhat energized tone, she explained to me how a certain transaction did not work out due to the neglect of one of the parties. She went on to say that though she was disappointed with the turn of events, she chose not to dwell on it.
While I thought this was a good and positive attitude, it was what she said next that intrigued and inspired me.She said,
“I choose to prioritize my life’s plans and also recognise that I have untapped potential. This is something that happens even to the accomplished so I will not wallow in self pity. Rather, I will focus on the lessons learned and use them as energy to move on.”
Powerful statements from one so young, I thought to myself. I however found myself questioning whether I had the same attitude in relation to my endeavours. The more I reflected, the more I realized that this was not the preserve of the young at age. It is an attitude one should have throughout their lifetime endeavours.
My experience is that people are more comfortable being told that they have potential than acknowledging and internalising that characteristic for themselves. The reasons for such behavior are left for colleagues to assist me to explain!
I would therefore advocate a conscious resolve to self discovery as impetus for actualizing potential. I think that internalizing the fact that you possess potential whether by talent or opportunity is a powerful boost! It helps with targeted focus towards achievement of personal as well as organizational goals.
Treat and humour yourself by approaching potential in a more progressive way!
